About

My name is Andrea Surova and I am the matriarch of a multicultural family formed by adoption, donor conception, and natural means. I am a native of Massachusetts with a background in music, writing, and neonatal brain research. Cultural identity has always fascinated me as I incorporate my mostly Slavic roots into my American mentality.
Homespun Culture was born from a need to connect my youngest two children with their Latinx heritage. My family garden, as I call it, includes roots in El Salvador, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Belarus, Croatia, Italy, Ireland, England, and Scotland!

Our mission is to promote the development of a healthy cultural identity by incorporating into everyday life the language, traditions, music, cuisine, literature, and history of every family member's ancestral lands. Even if culture, race, or ethnicity does not display itself in physical characteristics, it is a vital part of one's sense of self.

As we develop a digital language course for school-age children up to adults using our own method, we offer the daily plan we ourselves use as a guide in our home school when you sign up for e-mail updates. Our podcast will feature interviews with people sharing their own stories about how they relate to nationality, race, or ethnicity.
